Backyard landscaping before

As seen in the landscape before and after photos the job required the supply and construction of block retaining walls, paving, drainage and automatic irrigation.

Garden lighting - mini spot lights Brisbane

Landscape design

Slate stack (also known as stack stone) and Merbau screens were constructed as a major focal point of this backyard landscape renovation. Native grass trees were planted in front of each feature panel. Mini spot lights on the grass trees shadowed their image nightly against the feature screens. Merbau timber decking extended out from a tiled alfresco area and was complimented by a paved stepper area in a decorative gravel finish.

low maintenance landscaping

A selection of clumping Bamboos, Liriope, Nandinas,Cordylines, New Zealand flax, Japanese blood grass, Lomandra, Pennasetum, Dianella silver streak,  baby panda grass , Mondograss and Zoysia grass (no mow grass) and feature plantings of native grass trees and a Pandanus trees gave the landscape a distinctive elegant touch.

Garden lighting

At night the yard was transformed to a entertaining area with the use of subtle low voltage garden lighting. Up lights ,deck lights and spotlights were used to highlight feature areas and walkways through paved area. Light sensitive sunset switches for garden lights with a timer ensured lighting came on at dusk and would turn off at dawn or were programmable to allow efficient use of the lighting.

The use of hard wearing  Sir Walter Buffalo turf was chosen to cope with constant traffic of kids and two small active dogs. Earthy neutral colours where used for the retainer walls,  pavers and garden edges.

Landscape drainage

Drainage was a very important inclusion in this Brisbane landscape renovation as the site was suffering from significant storm water run off from properties above. The use of slotted aggregate drains, along with storm water pits connecting into a rigid storm water drainage system ensured this backyard renovation had adequate drainage.

Brisbane Landscaping After

Landscape considerations

The use of clumping bamboos where chosen for there slender tall nature to give maximum privacy from the two story houses behind. Using a variety of four bamboos including Tiger Grass, Timor black bamboo , Grey Ghost and Budha belly bamboo gave different elements of texture, colour and height.

The Feature screens where built from h4 treated hardwood and steel to form a solid frame to hold the dressed Merbau timber slats.  Slate stack stone tiles attached on firm sealed  blue board form work. The floating timber deck  rests on concrete footings and treated timbers with additional drainage placed under the deck to avoid moisture.
