Link Block Retaining Wall Brisbane
Brisbane Landscapers Greenscene Gardenscope were engaged by a North Brisbane client to design and construct a durable retaining wall that would also direct flood water away from property structures. The retainer wall in question would incorporate over sixty meters of link wall with a varying retainer wall height. The wall was not to exceed one meter in height therefore avoiding additional council approvals.
On commencement major excavation work was undertaken to shape the landscape area for works. Excess soil was relocated to form a raised garden area to assist with redirection of storm water. This photo shows landscape preparation works underway.
On completion of excavation works, both structural footings and the first coarse of Boral soft split link wall blocks were laid. The footings for this work was a one hundred millimeter concrete footing with reinforcement rod installed in the footing. Accurate landscape levels were ascertained by laser level.
After our initial footings had sufficiently cured the retainer wall was constructed. One hundred millimeter socked agg pipe was installed behind the wall, along with drainage gravel to ensure no water pressure could build up behind and undermine the retaining walls structure. This photo depicts the agg drain being laid behind the wall.
The retaining wall, being of varying heights was then terraced for aesthetic presentation. Numerous levels of garden areas were formed. Terracing this retaining wall added character to the garden areas, assisted with the direction of storm water and disguised the varying heights of the area. The following photos show terracing to both the side and rear areas of the structure.
Simple, low maintenance, colour by foliage plants such as Liriope stripey white, Cycad Revoluta, Strelizia (Bird of Paradise), Dracena Song of India, Dracena Tri-colour / Colourama, Xanadu, Lomandra Hystrix and various Cordylines will grow to create a future vibrant garden with year round colour and… without the maintenance.

Sunshine Coast landscaping – Brisbane Landscaping
www.greenscenegardenscope.com.au landscaping design and construct aesthetic and sustainable landscapes. Conveniently located Between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Greenscene Gardenscope’s central location allows us to source materials from a wider range of suppliers and ensures our clients receives quality materials and prompt service every time.
A recent landscaping project undertaken in Brisbanes inner suburb of Alderly presented narrow and tight access, a issue becoming more prominent with Brisbane and Sunshine Coast landscape projects. As presented by our landscape before and after pictures, the landscape works in this site were to be quite extensive given that there was no machine access.
Landscape works included terracing the backyard for aesthetics. This was to be created by manually shaping the existing surface, installing a Tasman GB block wall and importing top soil. A drainage issue from higher neighbouring properties was considered. A sub surface drainage system utilizing 100mm socked agg drain was installed along side and rear fence lines to minimize in flows. Two surface pits were also installed below retaining wall to cater for extensive rainfall periods common in South East Queenslands storm season.
This landscape construction photo shows
Greenscene Gardenscope landscapers with landscape works underway. Laser levels are used constantly throughout the project ensuring accurate levels are attained for structural landscape and drainage works.
The aesthetic appeal of the landscape was created using 400mm pavers as steppers with a decorative gravel in fill. A paver border edged the path, gardens and lawn areas. Soft Sir Walter Buffalo was chosen for the lawn as it is ideal for childrens play, shade tolerant and has low water requirement. A Balinese planting theme was selected to soften the straight
lines used in the structural landscapes. Plant selections included MaCarthurii palm, various Cordylines, Song of India, Crotons, various Bromeliads, Liriope stripey whites and Xanadu. A hardy selection using colour foliage plants to create a low maintenance garden with year round colour.
Automated irrigation was installed to garden areas using a low flow micro irrigation system, with dual tank water and town water supply. Elegant stainless steel garden lighting complemented the project. These were used as up lights spaced along the centre of the path, with mini spot lights highlighting the garden features and subtle bollard lighting spaced around the garden borders.
Greenscene Gardenscope designed this landscape as a low maintenance, modern style landscape with a Balinese influence. Greenscene Gardenscope cater for all aspects of landscape from courtyards to commercial. Please consider www.greenscenegardenscope.com.au to create a sustainable landscape package.

A detailed overview of a proposed landscape recently designed for a Pelican Waters, Caloundra client.
Our client engaged Greenscene gardenscope to design a garden and living space to compliment Queenslands outdoor entertaining lifestyle. The site overlooks the prestigious pelican waters golf course and the customer was eager to enhance and beautify the outlook from their rear deck. Entertaining and lifestyle were major considerations in the landscape design.
The garden design structured with low maintenance in mind influenced drought hardy plant selections such as pandanus baptisii variegated to give striking accent in corners of the garden, yuccas, draceneas , cordylines, dianella silver streak, tradescantia (rheoe) and zoysia were used to give colour, texture, structure and sculptural aspects to the areas.
Garden lighting plays an integral role in bringing the gardens to life at night and creating a fantastic entertaining area. The incorporation of garden lighting and out door stereo speakers for the deck and in amongst the garden will create a directional entertaining atmosphere without blasting out the neighbours with music from inside the house. The use of a water fountain with delicate lighting designed to shimmering across the face of the pool will bring a gentle touch to the backyard which is over looked by the timber deck and bbq area.
Drought hardy sir walter turf was selected for the back yard to create a durable play area for the children. The dark green grass covering wrapping around the the deck and block retaining walls. A sitting area was introduced to the corner of the yard were a large tropical birch tree was incorporated to shade the bench seat set amongst day lillies and iris. Tracheospermum Jasminiodes ( star Jasmine) trained up a trellis on a side wall of the house which when in flower will subtly fill the house with a sweet scent.
The side court yard was influenced by the importance to maximize the use of natural light, breeze and functionality of a utility area for the washing line, rubbish bins and a small garden shed for mower, bikes, etc. The incorporation of a herb and vegetable/ fruit garden in pots and retained garden beds was added to the area to provided fresh herbs, vegetables and fruit for the family. Lemon trees, limes tree, orange, mandarin, bay tree, basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, mint, parsley, fennel were just some of the range selected.
Sante fe pavers paved through the outside utility area gives a practical and economical solution to the ground space. Drainage and automatic irrigation are also planned for this project. This landscape project is designed to be low maintenance, minimizing requirements of mowing, hedging, pruning, fertilising, watering, weed and pest spraying. Keep a look out for incredible photos of this project in the future.

We would like to thank www.greenscenegardenscope.com.au for bringing life and space to our outdoor living area, bare rock wall and making major improvements to our drainage problems.
From the initial meeting we had a vague idea of what we wanted. Your visions and hard work gave us two beautiful areas to enjoy, which is more than we expected.
To look out from our office and not see a bare rock wall, but see amazing rock wall garden is so nice on the eyes.
Walking out to our outdoor living area is such a transformation. From the paving to the retaining wall has given the area such a
feeling of space and clean fresh lines.
Loving the drainage solutions- my thongs don’t float away in big down pours anymore.
During the process, we were grateful for your knowledge, experience, friendliness and time, which you gave for this sometimes frustrating project.
Thank you for creating gorgeous outdoor rooms for us to enjoy and we look forward to more projects in the future.
Graham and Shanely.
As a Brisbane landscaper undertaking all facets of landscape design and construction we are regularly called upon to design a landscape unique to our customers requirements.
A recent landscape paving project in Brisbane’s outer suburbs is an example of an unique backyard landscape solution. Our clients
property had been built with a sunken floor in the garage, minimizing driveway slope. The situation had created an area along side the property that had varying ground levels to consider in the landscape design.
During our initial landscape consultation / quote, our qualified structural landscapers and horticulturist focus on our customers requirements. In this case our clients landscape requirements were for a utility area (washing line), a paved sitting area to utilize an unused area, drainage to solve water problems and an access path or paving around property.
Our landscape design for this project incorporated three levels. While this accounted for the unusual levels of this site, it also created an aesthetic landscape feature with three defined areas . Landscape areas included steppers to provide access to clothes line. Retaining edges were used to step up to a solid paved sitting area. A further retaining edge was used to step up to a feature paved transit area . A creative landscape design using retaining edges to resolve uneven surfaces and to define landscape areas.
Drainage problems were identified to be caused by poor levels of existing surface drains, poor location of surface drains, an air conditioning unit draining on ground, and an agg drain from rear of an existing retainer wall. Our landscape drainage solution included relocating drains (a laser level used to determine appropriate locations), correcting levels of surface drain, connecting air conditioner overflow to storm water, and connecting agg drain to storm water.
Large format 400mm Pavers works were selected for this project. Pavers were laid on a combination of road base / sand footings and concrete footings. Sub surface drainage was added under paved sitting area. White decorative gravel was used to infill paver areas. A laser level was used to ascertain accurate levels for both paving and drainage. We would consider this imperative tool to accurately complete such a landscape project.
This landscape project resolved drainage issue and created an aesthetic landscape area accommodating our clients
requirements. Problem surface levels were used in a innovative way creating a feature to the area.

Tropical gardens with low maintenance year round colour are ideal back yard gardens for those who like to bring colour to
their gardens without high maintenance. Deep reds and purples of the cordyline, multi colours of the crotons, small clumping palms for screening, the unique structures of dracenas. These are popular selections for mid story plant selections. Various understory plantings such as liriope stripey whites, xanadu, liriope evergreen giant, stralizea (bird of paradise), bromeliads are examples of understory tropical plantings.
Formal gardens commonly involve hedges or shaped plants and are therefore considered higher maintenance. Plants commonly used in Brisbane for hedging and shaping are murrayas, various species of syzygiums (lilly pilly) and acmeneas, austramyrtus blushing beauty, gardenias, buxus. Other species less commonly used now include duranta gold and alternanthera. These were often used as a two stage hedge for there colour contrast (purple & yellow)
Contemporary designs commonly incorporate a more structured or feature plants. Selections include
cordyline red sensation for it strapey foliage, yuccas, agave’s and dracenas for there unique structure . Australian native grass trees, pandanus (particularly coastal) and various grasses are also common selections. Palms such as red latains, bismarkias, ponytail, dwarf dates and canary island date work well as a bold statement and feature.
Native gardens may include various grevilleas, callistemons and banksia,(for bird attracting & colour). Grasses such as lomandras and dianellas are extremely tolerant of climate changes, dietes are popular in various forms for there flower. Many planting used by council and revegetation groups are now being included in the urban landscape design. Lophostemons, eleocarpus, bunkinghamia, waterhousia, cupaniopsis, harpulia, schotia, xanthostemons are used extensively as shade trees. Native cycads like leprozamia, macrozamia give a dramatic effect to a native setting amongst xanthorea grass trees and other native shrubs.
Coastal plantings-Salt hardy planting of westringia, myoporum, coconut palms, pandanus, and new varieties of lomandra and dietes show tolerance in coastal areas on the sunshine coast and gold coast where they are exposed to the prevailing winds and adverse conditions.
